Alright, let’s talk about Australia’s role<\/a> in the Pacific War against Japan. It’s a hugely important part of our history, and frankly, it often gets a bit overshadowed by the European theatre.<\/p>\n

The quick answer to what Australia did in the Pacific War is that we were right in the thick of it from day one. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941, they also launched attacks across Southeast Asia and the Pacific, directly threatening Australia. General Douglas MacArthur was appointed Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in the Southwest Pacific Area, with his headquarters initially in Brisbane, Australia.<\/p>\n

Defending the Homeland: The Darkest Days<\/h3>\n

The first half of 1942 was a terrifying time for Australians. Japanese forces were advancing incredibly quickly, and it looked like an invasion was a real possibility. Our resources were stretched thin, with many experienced troops still serving overseas.<\/p>\n

While relatively unsuccessful in terms of damage to shipping, it highlighted the fact that no part of Australia was truly safe. The Kokoda Track Campaign<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was arguably Australia’s most brutal and defining campaign of the war.
