Cities began to flourish as centres of Islamic learning and trade.<\/p>\n As the centuries progressed, another major influence began to shape Azerbaijan: Turkic peoples. Migrations from Central Asia brought Turkic languages and customs. This was a gradual process, but it laid the groundwork for the eventual linguistic and cultural dominance of Turkic elements.<\/p>\n The Seljuk Turks, a major Oghuz Turkic dynasty, rose to prominence in the 11th century. Their expansion had a profound impact on Azerbaijan. They brought with them their language, culture, and a more solidified Turkic identity.<\/p>\n The Seljuks established a powerful empire, and Azerbaijan was a key part of it. However, after the decline of the main Seljuk Sultanate, the region often experienced periods of fragmentation, with various local dynasties and rulers vying for power.<\/p>\n The late medieval and early modern periods are defined by the titanic struggles between major Eurasian powers, with Azerbaijan often finding itself on the front lines.<\/p>\n The Safavid dynasty, who came to power in Persia in the early 16th century, had a pivotal role.
