Lead singer of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, commited suicide at his home in Seattle, Washington. Legendary band Nirvana was formed in December 1987 with Kurt Cobain on guitar and vocals, bassist Krist Novoselic and Aaron Burckhard as the original drummer.  On the 25th of September 1990 Dave Grohl became the latest drummer in the band and in 1991 they were first signed to a major label, Geffen Records. In a relatively short time they experienced tremendous success all over the world and as their success grew Cobain felt he was loosing control of his music. He felt under enormous pressure and started using heroin to escape reality. Around the same time he had met the guitarist and lead singer of the band “Hole”, Courtney Love and they started a relationship together. They were married in February 1992 and soon had a daughter together. They were also both using heroine and their relationship became strained. Cobain’s drug use increased and on the 4th of March 1994 he attempted to commit suicide with a drug overdose. Luckily Courtney Love awoke to call an ambulance and although it was thought to be an accidental drug overdose, he had written a suicide note. Despite Love contacting police, explaining that Cobain was suicidal, very little was done. On the 5th of April 1994 Kurt Cobain was found dead aged 27 after committing suicide with a shotgun.

Sir Winston Churchill resigned as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom due to ill health.  Sir Churchill gave his resignation to the Queen personally at a dinner held in his honour at Buckingham Palace. This was Churchill’s second term as Prime Minister, the first in 1940- 1945 and was a brilliant wartime leader but in July 1945 (Just 12 weeks after Churchill announced the unconditional surrender of Germany) he lost the general election to Labour leader, Clement Attlee. The people of the UK were looking forward to the introduction of the ‘welfare state’ which had been proposed by Labours William Beveridge in 1942. With immense poverty in Britain that started before the war, and the wartime austerity measures put in place the people of the UK wanted a change. In 1951 Churchill became Prime Minister once more but at the age of 77 the pressures were taking their toll. In 1953 he was made a Knight of the Order of the Garter for his service to the country. Churchill remained a backbencher in Parliament until 1964 and he died a year later on the 24th of January 1964 at the age of 90. In 2002 he was voted the ‘Greatest Britain of All Time’ in a nationwide pole with over a Million Britain’s taking part.
