This Day in History: 1991-11-05

In 1991 Chairman of the Mirror Group Mr Robert Maxwell’s body was found in the sea just of the coast of Tenerife. Born in Czechoslovakia Mr Maxwell became one of Britons richest men owning the Daily Mirror and the Daily News (a New York newspaper). He was sailing aboard his yacht the Ghislaine when he was reported missing at 10:00 GMT, his body was not found until 17:00 GMT. It would later emerge how much financial trouble his business empire was in, with £1 billion in debt and £440 million missing from the company’s pension fund.
